How can a newspaper specializing in business actually print this cartoon without irony? Is it possible that they have no idea that the median household income in the United States was around 50,000 in 2011 according to the Census ACS Survey? That means that half of U.S. households are living on less than that.
I live in Pima County, AZ, which is one of the poorer places in the country. I worked with four single mothers last year. All of them made less than 16,800 last year working demanding, full-time jobs. This cartoonist thinks it’s difficult to support a child on 260,000 per year? Try supporting a family when you’re below the poverty line.
I’m upset because this is representative of the mindsets of people who make public policy. They have been so rich their entire lives that they have no concept of how difficult it is for the majority of the country. They whine about having to pay taxes to provide for welfare when they have no idea that those taxes are going to people who are attempting to support themselves and their children on a household income that is less than 20,000 per year.
I’m okay with taxes going up on people who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year because they can afford it.
