Today’s the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and although abortion is still a hotly contested issue, support for abortion rights is at an all-time high at 63% according to Pew Research Center, and with good reason.
Legal abortion saves women’s lives. In each year prior to Roe v. Wade that data is available for, more than 100 American women died from complications from illegal abortions, most of which were “performed by unskilled practitioners in unsafe settings.” By 1980, the number of abortion related deaths in the United States had decreased to 16 that year, due to how much safer legal abortion is.
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 68,000 women die from unsafe abortions each year around the world. Millions more have complications.
Let’s be thankful that the U.S. Supreme Court had the sense to make abortion legal.
